In 2007, the personal library of the Granite State’s leading Chief Justice Charles Doe (1830-1896) was discovered in a barn in Rollinsford and donated to the New Hampshire Supreme Court. 88 boxes of materials were turned over in the same year that saw the New Hampshire Supreme Court’s address change to honor Doe.
This article is the first collection of revelations about the lives, thoughts, and inner musings of the Doe family as evidenced by extensive marginalia, letters, drawings, poems, jokes and news clippings, and other items tucked between pages of the 1,764 books and journals in the library.
