Can
you describe the firm’s history to me?
Very briefly, Sulloway & Hollis was started by two partners in 1852. We have
grown to be Concord, New Hampshire’s largest law firm and one of the largest
law firms in northern New England. The firm has two offices in Gorham, New Hampshire,
and New London, New Hampshire, and has recently opened a principal office in
Portland, Maine, to better serve the needs of our clients.

What
are the firm’s expectations with respect to pro bono and public
service?
Throughout its history, Sulloway & Hollis has recognized the value,
both to our attorneys and to the community we serve, of both volunteering
and supporting
charitable, government, and professional organizations. Each of our employees
is encouraged and expected to be actively involved in the community in the
manner of his or her choosing. Presently, Sulloway & Hollis attorneys
and staff are actively involved in a variety of community-based
and charitable organizations.
In addition, Sulloway & Hollis encourages all attorneys to accept cases through
the New Hampshire Bar Association’s Pro Bono Referral program.

Does
Sulloway & Hollis provide a formal training program for new lawyers?
Sulloway & Hollis offers a variety of both formal and informal
training to assist each attorney’s professional development. Upon
their arrival at Sulloway, new
associates are teamed up with mentors who are responsible for fostering and
nurturing their growth and development within the firm. Associates’ assignments
are initially
coordinated by their mentors. In addition, mentors collect evaluations on
associates’ work and routinely provide feedback to the associates.
Associates are formally
reviewed once a year.
Beyond
the institutionalized mentoring program, Sulloway cultivates
a frank and open work environment which allows associates to
work closely with partners
and with other associates to build and enhance their professional skills.
Recent
developments in the law are reported on a weekly basis at department
meetings. Sulloway also sponsors in-house CLE courses on a variety
of topics throughout
the year.

What
do your associates say about working at Sulloway?
“The
most rewarding aspect about practicing at Sulloway & Hollis
has been the ability to work on a wide variety of matters.
I routinely work on medical malpractice
defense and employment issues, but I’ve also had the opportunity
to work on real estate, will contests, and bankruptcy matters.
I
feel like I am constantly
exposed
to and learning new things, which is why I went into the law
in the first place.”
- Melissa Hanlon
“I love being an attorney at Sulloway & Hollis. Sulloway has been very supportive of me trying to expand my practice. They have done a great job making my husband feel included in the Sulloway family. I have always volunteered in my community and Sulloway encourages me to continue that practice. The associates at Sulloway are a supportive, solid, and social group. Finally, Sulloway understands that life is more than just work!”
- Amy Manzelli

What
do your paralegals say about working at Sulloway?
“Paralegal
work at Sulloway is consistently challenging and stimulating.
From the initial analysis of case issues, through discovery,
to the preparation
of trial exhibits, I enjoy thinking creatively and using
my research and writing skills to provide the attorneys with
the information they need
as a case develops.
The breadth of experience among the paralegals means there
is always someone who can help with problem solving or identifying
a more optimal way
to accomplish
specific tasks. The process of taking a case to the end
is a team effort which I find very satisfying.”
- Lynne Morgan
“The most rewarding aspect of working as a paralegal
at Sulloway is the team approach utilized to most effectively represent
clients. Highly skilled
attorneys work closely with paralegals. The paralegal is a respected
member of the team
and is expected that specific responsibilities will be
completed efficiently, thoughtfully and thoroughly. Working closely
with the responsible
attorney,
paralegals assist with many aspects of case handling, including:
factual investigation, document gathering and analysis, communications
with clients,
working with
expert
witnesses, assisting with exhibits and trial preparations.
The interesting and diverse nature of the practice and the assignments
is gratifying. Some
days are spent reviewing thousands of pages of documents
to find the "smoking
gun",
other days involve interviewing family members of people
involved in fatal accidents.”
- Jeanne
Batchelder
