Derek D. Lick concentrates his practice in litigation, including, among other things, providing defense to insured parties sued in state and federal courts and representing clients in disputes involving construction, development and real estate projects and construction payment and performance bond claims. Mr. Lick has successfully defended personal injury claims at jury trial for the operator of New Hampshire’s largest indoor entertainment venue and the association promoting one of New Hampshire’s largest tourism events (bringing 300,000 to 400,000 people to the state for its week-long event). He has also represented one of the largest and most successful property developers in New Hampshire before the state courts.

Mr. Lick has represented clients in federal court, in all ten of the State’s superior courts as well as before the New Hampshire Supreme Court. On occasion, Mr. Lick also represents individuals and businesses before the New Hampshire legislature. Mr. Lick is a member of the Defense Research Institute and the Tri-State Defense Lawyers Association. He serves alongside New Hampshire federal and state judges and clerks and other selected practitioners on the New Hampshire Bar Association's Committee on Cooperation with the Courts. He currently serves as the leader of the firm’s Insurance Practice Group.

Mr. Lick graduated from Boston University and from the Vanderbilt School of Law, where he was articles editor for the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law. As part of Vanderbilt’s Juvenile Practice Clinic, Mr. Lick represented juvenile clients by serving as guardian ad litem before the state courts and lobbied for the rights of relative foster care providers before the Tennessee state legislature.

Prior to entering law school, Mr. Lick served as the Press Secretary for Democratic Congressman Martin O. Sabo, the Chairman of the House Budget Committee and a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. As the Press Secretary, Mr. Lick was responsible for developing and implementing the congressman's media strategy in Washington, D.C. and in the Congressman's Minneapolis, Minnesota district, one of the country's top-20 media markets.

Mr. Lick resides in Sutton with his wife and four children. He is active in his community, assisting in coaching his children’s baseball, T-ball, and soccer teams, and serving as the leader for the recently-rechartered local Cub Scout pack. Mr. Lick also serves on the Sutton Zoning Board of Adjustment and on the Board of Directors of the Kearsarge Area Council on Aging, the non-profit organization that operates a senior center serving nine towns in the Mt. Kearsarge area.

Mr. Lick has been appointed by Governor John Lynch to serve on the New Hampshire Transportation Enhancement Advisory Committee, a committee that is tasked with recommending projects to receive special federal funding under the 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) that is dedicated to develop "livable communities" by selecting projects that "preserve the historic culture of the transportation system and/or enhance the operation of the system for its users."

Mr. Lick is a graduate of Leadership New Hampshire, an interactive year-long educational program designed to explore the issues and challenges which are critical to the State of New Hampshire. He is also active in New Hampshire politics, having served on the Democratic State Committee after being elected as an at-large representative to the Merrimack County Democratic Committee and as chairperson for the Sutton Town Democrats.
